This day in history:
On 9 November 1989 the Berlin Wall was finally breached by jubilant Berliners , unifying a city that had been divided for over 30 years. The 28-mile (45 km) barrier dividing Germany's capital was built in 1961 to prevent East Berliners fleeing to the West, but as Communism in the Soviet Republic and Eastern Europe began to crumble, pressure mounted on the East German authorities to open the Berlin border. At midnight on 9th November East Germany's Communist rulers gave permission for gates along the Wall to be opened after hundreds of people converged on crossing points.
